Mary Shelley, est née en 1797 à Somers Town, un faubourg de Londres. Elle est surtout connue pour son roman Frankenstein ou le Prométhée moderne, qu'elle a écrit quand elle n'avait que 18 ans. Les épreuves de sa jeune vie et la science de son époque ont grandement teintées son récit terrifiant. De ce fait, est reconnue comme l'auteure ayant créé le nouveau genre littéraire qu'est aujourd'hui la science-fiction.
